The next stop of this #XploreBharat Blog Train is Amritsar with Ritika
Aizwal, Till last few years the only memory I had about this place was while mugging up states and capitals of India in class 5th or 6th, never even thought it will be a place where we will make memories. Let me share a flashback with you, when I moved to Delhi post my graduation, I was staying in a Paying Guest accommodation, there I had 2 room mates one from Hyderabad and another one from north east, Earlier I never even took an effort to know where exactly from NE. But as our friendship grew I came to know she was from Mizoram. I remember the dish she used to either bring or make for us called ‘Koat Pitha’ Koat Pitha is fried fritters made using rice flour, jaggery and bananas. It was just Yumm… Though later on we moved at separate places we stayed in touch, one day She called me to invite for her marriage, I was very excited but it was not happening in Delhi rather at her home town Aizwal. I was not sure but ‘she wouldn’t forgive me if I miss her wedding’ was my doubt. so we packed our bags and reached.
Let me navigate you thru this beautiful place and my experience.
The city is less populated, Beautiful houses on the mountains offer picturesque Sunrise and marvelous Sunset. The city resides between the clouds offering beautiful landscapes and suitable climate. Though the infrastructure is not as advanced as other metros.
Mizo people are quite introvert, they won’t come to you and talk to you rather you will have to approach them, they are ready to help. They are warm and welcoming however if you know someone local that would be a big advantage as language is a considerable barrier.
How To Reach:
By Road:
Aizawl is accessible by road from Silchar and Imphal. Direct Sumos are available for Shillong and Guwahati.
By Train:
Train services are available only up to Silchar. From there, one can take a taxi.
By Air:
The only airport in Mizoram is Lengpui, around 45 kms from Aizawl. It provides flight services to Kolkota, Guwahati and Imphal.
Where to Stay:
There are many Hotels in the city most of them are at Zarkawt. Reach this palce and you will be able to get a decent room even at last minute.We stayed at Hotel regency, as the wedding venue is closer.
Once all the rituals and the wedding reception was over, we planned to go around the city. One of the brides cousin volunteered to be our guide and companion.
Traveling within the city:
The first place we went to was
Mizoram State Museum
This Place has 4 floors, it offers an insight in the history of mizoram and its culture. There is a entry ticket of 20-30 rs. There are different galeries like Textile, Ethnology, History, Archeology, Anthropology and Natural history. You can get a sneak peak into it.
Then comes the
Solomon’s temple
Solomon’s Temple in Aizawl, Mizoram is constructed by Kohhran Thianghlim which is rendered ‘The Holy Church’ in English. The church was founded by Dr. L.B. Sailo in 1984.The huge white church on the mountain top offers nothing but peace and serenity. The architecture and interiors are marvelous.
Durtlang hill
This is a peak that offers complete view of the city, specially at night when the city lights up the view from the top of these hills is breath taking. There are many trails for Trekking and camping as well.
For a shoppoholic like me the trip will be incomplete if I dont visit the local market, so here comes
Bara Bazzar
It is a flea market, that offers handicraft, handmade wicker baskets and colourful garments. The market is situated on the other side of the ridge.There you can find traditional clothes as well as lot of local street food.
KV Paradise
We all know Taj Mahal, as a symbol of love however this place is no less. This is a beautiful place on a hill top which represents love and memories.
It is built by Khawlhring. When his wife Varte died in an accident in 2001, he decided to build a memorial for his wife near his house. This house holds her clothes, photos, rewards and accolades which she earned. The place is very close to Durtlang hills, its popular and local transport is easily available. I liked this place for the extraordinary feeling and intent behind this entire idea.
Reiek Heritage Village
This is a beautiful resort which offers trecking and gives an experience of living the rural mizo life. closest to the nature. This place is surrounded by forests.Its located 45KM south to aizwal and taxis or cars can be hired to reach this place.
There are few more places which we couldn’t connect because of insufficient time however I am sure they must be equally beautiful and enchanting. here is the list of few places that your should see although we couldn’t
