Papa Kehtey the….. #A2ZChallenge

My dad was gem of a person, he had an ability to leave impression on everyone in first meeting itself. I still remember the day when I got a call that he had a heart attack early morning, I had spoken to him precisely one and half hour back, before it happened. He sounded so jovial and normal. All of a sudden the world came crashing down, Obviously the call came to Suvin and when he gave me the news, I shouted on him “Are you out of your mind, I just spoke to him in the morning. You heard it wrong. It must be someone else”. My heart shattered into several pieces. I was inconsolable. From that moment till next 48 hours I remember precisely every moment as it happened and it wasn’t bearable.

Age of the child doesn’t matter, parents are always parents, and girls are specially known to be papas darling. My dad was very soft spoken yet strict. He was very fond of road travel, we had a road trip of 22 days entire south of India.

He had a repository of stories, and on most of the occasions he would pop out one of the most relevant one from his Pitara. He was a wonderful teacher, I am sure his students must be attending his lectures as they were entertaining and not boring.

While I was preparing for my exams, he always used to tell me study like a marathoner not a Sprinter. Study hard and regularly, and when you see the finish line close increase your speed and run. He used to wake up many times to check on me and to make tea for me.

He was a funny man when it would come to sleeping, he was blessed with sleep. My mom would always tease him saying he has blessings from Kumbhakaran. Can you believe a man taking a nap, sitting on chair with a cup of hot tea held in his hand, he was mischievous when Me and my brother used to study, especially during night studies, My brother used to dose off with a book in front of him, my dad before waking him up would move the copy or book he is reading and then used to wake him up, and ask him to study. He would confidently and off course irritated reply, “I am studying only”, only to be ridiculed by me and dad that were you studying the table. Now you know where I got this larger than life positivity for life. Life is so amazing when you are a kid. Not one but there are many memories, memories that I am fond of, memories that keep me going.

However closest to my heart is the moments of my bidai, The dad whom you see as the strongest man all your life, who can carry any burden on his shoulder with a smile and  can solve all your problems and shield you from moms anger too, he is most vulnerable when saying good bye to his married daughter, The feeling of leaving your home sets in when you see your dad crying. That one moment is with you for life long. Can’t tell you more about him, I am already in tears and Suvin is at work, so who will handle me?

Why I am remembering about him today, it’s not that I am missing him just today, but I miss him every day, no matter how many years past by. But it’s his birthday today that makes me miss him more.

I am sure even you have some fondest memories with your parents, cherish them. If you have time with them tell them how much you love them, tell them they are important for you, no one knows when life takes unexpected twists.

My mom left us 3 years ago after a long bout of illness. We wanted her to get better but seeing her suffer killed us too. Losing a parent can be the worst thing anyone can face, at any age. My Dad is now both my mother and father and loves me for both too. This was emotional, very emotional.
